The background:
This is a project we have been working on for two years. Most wrenches are forged from tool steel, but It was determined that this wrench must be Titanium. Why Titanium? It’s extremely corrosion resistant, featuring No/Low magnetic signature. Extraordinarily strong, titanium possesses a greater strength-to-weight ratio than stainless, steel or aluminum. Titanium weighs about 60% less than steel in density, producing tools at nearly half the weight of steel.
This means that the wrench needed to be machined out of a solid billet of Titanium. Making an adjustable wrench in the machine shop is a lot more complicated than it sounds. Over 27 hours of machining is needed to create just a single wrench!
Why Titanium?
Titanium is a great material for wrenches because of its unique combination of properties. Some of the most important properties of titanium that make it suitable for use in wrenches include:
-
Lightweight: Titanium is much lighter than other metals commonly used in wrenches, such as steel. This makes it easier to handle and reduces user fatigue during extended use.
-
High Strength: Despite its lightweight, titanium is extremely strong and durable. This makes it resistant to wear and tear, and able to withstand heavy loads without breaking or deforming.
-
Corrosion Resistant: Titanium has excellent resistance to corrosion and does not rust, even in harsh environments. This makes it ideal for use in harsh, outdoor environments where exposure to moisture, salt, and other corrosive substances is a concern.
-
Non-Magnetic: Unlike steel, titanium is non-magnetic, which makes it ideal for use in applications where magnetic interference is a concern.
-
Biocompatibility: Titanium is also biocompatible, meaning it does not react with living tissues or cause any adverse reactions. This makes it suitable for use in medical and dental implants and other applications where biocompatibility is important.
Overall, titanium’s combination of strength, light weight, corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, and biocompatibility make it an excellent material for wrenches and other tools that need to be strong, lightweight, and durable.
